Bringing Stories To Life

This is one job that will allow you to walk the line between art and technology, with a little bit of drama thrown in. Every one knows Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Tom and Jerry - some animated characters that always delight and entertain us. Animation  is one of  the most sought after jobs of the 21st  century.

Animation:  is sometimes misunderstood with cartooning. It is the art with which inanimate objects are brought to life with the help of various modern computer based sequencing techniques. It is an art that merges text, images, graphics, animation, audio and video to create virtual magic. Creating an idea, developing it into a story script and giving technical assistance to it, are the procedures in making an animation.
An animator creates storyboards, background scenery and pre-visualizations for a piece. They create characters for a variety of projects like movies, television, advertisements etc. They read the script carefully, study the storyboard and try to get into the character. They must know and understand the character. Animation specialists also work with Visual Effects (VFX).

Daily Routine
* drawing storyboards and creating models * designing an animated environment that includes backgrounds, sets and objects * designing characters * creating each frame * working out the timing of movements and making sure things meet the script and soundtrack requirements
* using computer software, including flash, maya, lightwave and others
* working as part of a team * working with clients (developing concepts, pitching ideas, etc.)

How Animation works:
The Greek astronomer Ptolemy discovered this principle known as ‘Persistence of Vision’ which offers an explanation. If images are flashed before the eye at a speed of at least ten frames per second, the brain thinks it is seeing a single moving image. The number of frames per second (or FPS) directly correlates to how smooth the movement appears. If the frame rate is too slow, the motion will look awkward and jerky. If the frame rate is too high, the motion will blur.

Animation techniques
2D animation: also known as traditional animation, involves the creation of a high volume of separate drawings that define a sequence. These drawings are then traced with ink onto transparent celluloid sheets called cel, which are scanned and painted using a special application software. These cels are layered on top of each other to create a sequence. The sequence is later edited to synchronise the audio and video content. This technique is widely used in creating characters for animations and cartoon programmes. A full-length feature film produced using cel animation often requires a million or more drawings to complete?

3D CGI animation: This technique makes extensive use of animation software programmes. 3D objects are constructed using curves or 2D geometric figures. Software programmes are used to modify the texture, light and colour of the object surface. Virtual cameras are used to zoom, focus, illuminate and resize the 3D objects. Important frames are developed to regulate the flow of intermediate frames. This technique is commonly used to create animation for television programmes, movies and online and console games.

3D motion capture animation:  is the process of creating 3D characters and similar to the 3D CGI animation technique. However, the techniques differ with respect to the time when the animation effects are introduced. To produce animation effects, sensors from a computer are attached physically to a human being. These sensors help coordinate the real-time movements of the human actor with the movements of a computerised 3D character. This technique is widely used for low-resolution games, Internet characters, live TV performances and special effects for animated movies.

Computer generated Imagery or 3D animation: 3D or three-dimensional animation, which has more depth and is more realistic, are a series of images/ objects created using computers or any other digital media. In addition to the skills in drawing, composition and character design, 3D animators deal with modelling, rendering, texturing and lighting. The texture, lighting and colour of the 3D objects are modified using software programmes and virtual cameras are used to focus, resize, zoom and illuminate the figures. This digital animation has the power to create effects not possible with Classical animation. Film, advertising, video and gaming are the fast growing fields for 3D animation. This technique makes extensive use of animation software programmes like 3ds Max (Autodesk), Softimage|XSI (Avid), MAYA (Autodesk) etc.

An Animated feature film, which offers considerable employment prospects, is a combined talented effort of a wide variety of artists. A typical animation film requires around 500 animators. India has over 300 animation studios employing over 12,000 animation professionals. In addition to outsourcing, content is being made for the Indian market as well. Films like Hanuman, Krishna, My Friend Ganesha, etc. have proved that animation can make huge profits at the box office.

Animation has taken some major leaps forward over the last few years. And its applications are more varied than ever—from advertising to special effects to video games. Animation is not just for children to enjoy after school or on Saturday mornings while eating sugary cereal. Whether online or on the big screen, animation is in high demand. So if you're thinking about starting an animation career, your timing is impeccable. Jobs galore: India has more than 300 animation studios, which employ over 15,000 animation professionals. Though entertainment through film and television is the main area of application in this profession, animation is also needed in other areas such as business, sales, engineering, education and advertising. Animators can also find jobs in print media and publishing firms. Freelance work is another option, particularly for web animators. Animators can also branch into website design, CD-Rom production, graphics designing and three-dimensional product modelling.
A career in animation has huge scopes in the fields of:
